Department for Transport announces £8.5million boost for short sea and inland waterway shipping

The Department for Transport (DfT) has announced the award of a substantial Freight Facilities Grant to Robert Wynn and Sons Ltd. (RWSL) for the development of an innovative transportation system making best use of short-sea routes and inland waterways. The £8.5M grant will cover 99% of the cost of building a Multi-Purpose Pontoon (Terra Marique) vessel and converting a former inland barge (the Inland Navigator) to transport Abnormal Indivisible Loads, typically in excess of 150 tonnes. The project underscores the Government's policy of maximising the use of water for the movement of these disruptive loads. Over the next 20 years the project will remove significant numbers of abnormal loads from the increasingly congested road network.
