The Department for Transport has agreed to extend the grant award for the Terra Marique project to include the cost of re-fitting an inland barge to carry abnormal loads. The 'Humber Navigator' was purchased by Robert Wynn and Sons Ltd. following a ground-breaking trial in which the barge, carrying a dimensional mock-up of a 300 tonne load, successfully passed under the Newark Town Bridge on the river Trent. Following its refit, the vessel will now be able to carry abnormal loads under the Newark Town Bridge, onto existing and planned power station sites further up the Trent and the hinterland of the Midlands. The Terra Marique design will now be modified, adding semi-submersible capability which will allow it to act as a mother vessel capable transporting the Inland Navigator and other similar vessels along with their cargoes around Britain’s coast and across to the continent.
